So many things I could say about the wolf and how they are special. They represent family, protecting those they love and care about. There is a strength from working together as a pack, so to speak.
Like so many things, it is how we choose to see; is the cup half full or half empty? Are wolves a threat to our way of life? Or are they intelligent beings helping keep the balance in their environment? We all have the right to choose how we think about any subject, and it is certainly not my place to criticize another point of view. We all have our path and must follow in the way best for us.

I once saw a story about the Dukha, a nomadic tribe in Mongolia who are not only capable of living in harmony with the wild animals and birds, they actually work together to aid each others survival, man and animal. These people are known as The Reindeer Riders. They are taught from childhood the skills required to live this amazing, harmonious way of life. Certain chosen ones specifically train the eagles, as eagle hunting is held in high esteem and considered a great privilege. Those who are able to do it are well respected in the community.
They also domesticate the reindeer as well as train and hunt with the wolves. In the Dukha belief they have a spiritual connection with all animals. An amazing concept and one I would love to see first hand. How different would this world be if we could respect the right of all beings and their place in it?
One night when I was on my way home from the city driving on the #1 Highway I had an amazing encounter with a wolf that can only be called spiritual. It was dark and although I had never had an incident with wild animals crossing in front of me on this stretch of highway, I had certainly seen evidence of collisions on many occasions. It is always something to be aware of when driving during the night or day in the country.
On this night as I approached a small town intersection I was surprised to see a wolf approaching the road from the ditch. I slowed down as he was on the shoulder and I was not sure which way he was going to go. He stood there just looking at me and I at him as I rolled to a stop alongside. Once I had completely stopped he bent his head, turned around and took off in the direction from which he had come. Not wishing to be stopped in the middle of the highway I put the car in gear and gained speed as quickly as possible.
I was about a mile and a half from the intersection with enough speed to shift into fifth gear. As I entered a car left the intersection on the other side of the highway, straight through the stop sign without slowing down. Once again I slammed on the brakes, this time narrowly escaping the accident which surely would have happened had I not stopped for the wolf. The timing was amazing. I did not actually realize the significance until my heart stopped pounding and I had time to reflect.
Whoever was driving that car didn’t see me I’m quite sure, and if I had not stopped for the wolf, I would very likely have been T-boned, perhaps fatally….some things you just know are true in your heart. This same wolf came to me in a dream that night. I only saw his face looking at me for a minute or less, filling me with a sense of knowing. I believe he came to me to make certain I understood his message, that he indeed had saved me. When I awoke I knew this as absolute truth, no doubt in my mind. We can always find a reason to dismiss an occurrence such as this, it’s the simplest thing to do. I have had far too many special incidents in my life which prevent me from dismissing such gifts. I know I was blessed that night.
