Today is papa’s birthday and no the irony is not lost on me as I contemplate the 2 very different men who share this birth date.
While my father gave his life fighting against tyranny and oppression, fighting against oligarchs,
the other man is an oligarch selling freedom to the highest bidders ensuring the haves far outweigh the have-nots
While my father refused a wage for his government job in Cuba,
the other man blatantly crosses the moral boundaries to line his pockets using his position to ensure he is not held responsible
While my father continued to ease the pain and suffering with his doctoring skills, while marching through the poorest parts of the world
the other man is doing his best to ensure the poor cannot afford the minimum of health benefits not just in his country but all over the world
While my father insisted on there being a school (he would not let you join the campaign if you could not read or write, so they taught those who did not know while camped each night) as he marched against the oppressors knowing that if you could read and write there was less chance of you being taken for granted,
the other man is dismantling the educational system
While my father was loved by the people because he was one of them, working with them, not asking them to do anything he would not himself do,
the other man has enshrined his image in gold, placing himself on a pedestal to further separate himself from those beneath him. The other man is spending millions of dollars on a parade for himself while illegally deporting human beings to live in despicable conditions
While I love my father deeply for his humanity and selflessness, his love for all,
the other man I cannot bare to look at for his inhumane, deplorable, selfish, arrogant, egotistical, morally bankrupt behaviour
Feliz Cumpleaños Papá
