Freedom
One year we decided to go on a pilgrimage, facing our fears and challenging ourselves to live by the seat of our pants, no safety net. Not an easy thing to do in this day and age.
We found ourselves living in a tiny cabin high up in the mountains above New Denver, B.C. A truly amazing place to spend time. We barely had room to turn around; there was no indoor plumbing and no TV. It was both a wonderful and difficult experience, but one I look back on with very fond memories in spite of the challenges.
We previously met some people from New Zealand who taught us to make skin drums, a great experience! Shortly thereafter I went out for a walk in the woods to reflect, play my drum, and offer a prayer for guidance and gratitude. I was completely alone, or at least I thought I was. I was sitting on the ground on a blanket playing my drum on the side of the mountain when I suddenly felt a presence and stopped to listen. I could smell the animal which alerted me to how close he was to me. Without turning around I knew I was in the presence of a bear. He snorted to let me know he was there. In honour of his greatness, I did not turn around to challenge him in any way.
I admit my heart began to race as I did not know what he would do with me in his path, but he left me be, posing no threat to him. When I was sure he was gone I turned to face where he had been standing. I would hazard a guess it was a grizzly because of the terrain and remote location, but I cannot be sure, it was more of an intuitive feeling. Either way, I felt I had been given a great gift.
To be like the Grizzly, in command of his world, confident in his knowledge he is the master of his destiny. This is what I aspire to become.
