Trip to Jasper

July 17, 1993

A day out! and a trip to Jasper National Park. We enjoyed a lovely day and saw many special places and things. But it was this event on the way home which is most memorable.

We spent the day browsing through the shops, finishing the day at Miette Hot Springs. It was such a beautiful drive up the mountain and we all had a lovely relaxing time. There was a nice variety of wildlife along the highway, even around the building of the hot pool. I don’t think any of us wanted to leave, it was almost magical, and we headed home with wonderful memories.

Very soon after we passed the Obed Lake turnoff on the TransCanada highway I caught a glimpse of something outside Patrick’s window. I looked over and saw a pigeon flying right beside us, not more than a few feet away. It was keeping up with us at a speed of 110 km. If he had opened the window he could have touched the bird, it was that close.

I found this amazing because it was not changing course in any way. Patrick slowed down and the bird slowed down, still beside the window. Then it fell back and I thought it had finally flown away, but it was now on my side at my window. It then fell back again and once more flew beside Patrick’s window and stayed with us until we reached a sign saying Hargwen Road, a distance of some kilometers. It then suddenly changed course, turning around back towards the way from which it came.

I often wonder about this experience and wish I could understand the message it brought for us.

For most the dove is a symbol of peace and hope, as it is for me also.
