Dragonfly

One sunny Saturday afternoon Patrick and I went to Waskesui, north of Prince Albert Saskatchewan for a small adventure. This is the area where Grey Owl’s cabin still stands. It is a popular National Park with many seasonal visitors and the preferred location in which to own a cabin.
It is quite lovely there and we enjoyed our day, having a picnic, listening to live music, and taking a boat ride on the lake.

During our picnic I had a wonderful connection with a dragonfly. I was about to speak when one of those big blue dragonflies flew up and landed on my lips, sealing them shut so I could not speak. I was very grateful for its arrival, deciding to honour me with its presence. It was my very good fortune its landing was so perfectly timed on my closed lips.
It seemed to be quite comfortable resting there, enjoying the sun on its back, and I did my best not to laugh while people walking by stared and pointed at me in surprise. It remained for about five minutes, an absolute eternity, before deciding to move and allow me at last to break out in joyous laughter.
I have always been fascinated with dragonflies; the way they fly, their iridescent colours with wings that seem so delicate and fragile. I wonder at the possibility they are magical creatures, flitting in and out of our lives, blessing us with their presence.
As a child Duncan had convinced me they were something to fear because they would bite me and it would be very painful. My imagination led me to believe that an insect that large could indeed have a nasty bite, they are after all larger than a bee and I knew how much their sting hurts. It took me many years to overcome my fear.
I know it was their intention to stop me believing in the beauty around me, because this is a source of true happiness, to witness the many wonderful gifts right at our fingertips that do not cost a penny to enjoy. The magic prevailed as it had to, for now I see them in a positive light, constantly thrilled when they come to visit.

Speak no evil…..
Iridescence
