Flowers
Winter is long in most parts of Canada and there is such a sense of excitement when spring arrives and colour returns to the world.
While there is a welcome relief from the many extra summer chores with the coming of winter, what I truly miss is the burst of colour in the yard, the green leaves and the wonderful variety of the flowers. It is a great painting, the multifold variations of nature providing for us this great sensory awakening.
I often marvel at the way the petals of each flower can have more than one colour, blending one into another or in some cases divided with strong, clear lines. How is all of this possible? It seems a miracle to me to see so many combinations for even one kind of flower. Working in a flower shop with its attached greenhouse during summer months, I never tire of the amazing varieties that arrive in all year long.
I love colour, so it should come as no surprise I went a little crazy when I discovered pastels and their blending capabilities. This allowed me to fully explore the world of flowers. It was great fun to experiment in this new art form and to realize how different it was from the technical work I had been doing with the animals. There was a sense of freedom connected to this new world which allowed me to use my imagination more, being less reliant on the accuracy I felt I needed for the Pen & Ink animal drawings.
Nature is not always perfect, there are many anomalies which make it so interesting to keep discovering something new. There is actually a lot of joy associated with this idea of imperfection because of how imperfect I’ve always believed myself to be. I feel a kinship with the less than perfect world of plants, satisfied that beauty comes in many shapes and forms, an idea that is more perfect than many of us.
