It seems that fall is upon us, about a month early this year. Last weekend I drove up to Prince Albert to see my son and noticed on the drive along the way, that the trees are rapidly changing colour which means they will be falling from the trees before too long. It has always seemed to me that the leaves fall too soon each year because I absolutely love seeing that blaze of colour, each tree or bush providing it’s own shade to the palatte.
I was feeling kind of sad that this was happening so soon until I realized, had it not been this way I would have missed the fall colours completely. How fortunate for me that I did not miss this change of seasons which always marks a time for me to begin quiet reflection. Summer is so busy with all the outdoor activities, that we often forget to have quiet moments to enjoy what’s around us. I do love the summer – the heat of the sun, the colourful clothes, the beautiful gardens and the active bird life. I am energized by the heat and love spending as much time outside as possible. However, I also look forward to autumn – the crispness of the air in the morning leading into warm afternoons, then back to cool nights. There is a feeling of settling in ready to enjoy a quieter season. This reminds me of all the things I enjoy doing inside that I put aside during the warm summer days when I don’t want to be in the house. It’s time to draw, bake, or watch a good movie with a big bowl of popcorn. Of course I love to make a big pot of stew or soup to enjoy with a thick slice of buttered homemade bread, read a book and just enjoy slowing down a bit. I could easily hibernate over the winter months, content to follow my passions, so I am now wondering what it will be like to be in a climate that is fairly constant all year. No autumn leaves falling, no promise of snow and freezing temperatures (Actually I’m ok with that part!).
So now when I look at the trees with their lovely shades of green, yellow, red and orange, I consider it a wonderful going away present giving an oppportunity for me to be witness to this amazing display!
