This is a puppy update…. July 6, 2019

Mom has been stepping away from her duties, so of course the puppies have been looking more towards their other mom to fill in the gaps. This is really not a role I wanted, but 4 puppies whining at your door is a call which must be answered. I definitely preferred it when they were further away!!!

On a lighter note, they do provide a bit of entertainment and make me giggle often as they stumble over each other and try to run after the milking mom or Scott, who they often mistake for their milking mom (same color).

And of course they breached the wall….

For some reason the cement floor in my room is preferable to the one outside. They do not get any extra attention while in my room, and because I am trying to discourage them coming in, shoo them out the door as soon as they step in. However, if I am busy, they do sneak in and curl up on my shoes. The white pawed one whom I think we’ve named Hercules seems most insistent on being in my room. I suppose it is because I saved him from the jaws of Scrappy. He made the mistake of trying to share Scrappy’s meal, and was told in no uncertain terms this was not allowed. The screams were unbearable as I raced out the door to rescue the little guy.

But how does one resist this face….. I have named this one Lady as she is petite and graceful

Mali seems to be wary of the little guys, I think maybe because she’s afraid of stepping on them. I know I sure am – one must be very cautious when stepping out the door in the morning, or anytime really. Just a wriggling, tangled jumble of parts all under foot.

“Shh, Be vewy vewy quiet” and she’ll never know I’m here….. kind of Ike an exclamation mark!

She does her best to be far away from them, while they do their best to follow and keep up. Scott plays with them, but he tends to be a bit rough sometimes. Kind of forgets he’s much bigger and stronger, but he does surprise me with his tenderness towards them. He really is doing his best to behave, is Scott and he does have a gentle loving side which I am trying to encourage..

The grass is always greener…. something I think about as I watch them eat together when I feed them some dog food. I must stay and keep an eye out for Chiripa and Scott, who will move in and take the food if I don’t. So as I sit there observing, I have been interested to see how they climb over each other to get that morsel on the other side of the circle, while the food right under their nose gets ignored. They go under the body of one of the others or step over each other to get the food furthest away from them. Just one of those quirks that make me think about behavioural traits in us all. What is it that makes us strive for that which is most difficult to reach, rather than being satisfied with what we have right in front of us?

Everyone gets a puppy….

Sometimes when I’m working in my room, the kids all come by to visit the puppies. I enjoy these times, listening to their laughter and conversations. I just stop what I’m doing, a smile on my face as I remember afternoons spent with my own children enjoying similar moments. Sometimes I go sit on my step just to be closer and be part of the moment without actually participating. I find it rewarding despite not saying anything.

Two beauties…..
Just a fuzzy bundle of love….
Isn’t he gorgeous? And the puppy is cute too…..
Moments in time sharing the beauty of easy companionship….

The puppies are roaming further away from my door, exploring and playing in the grass, chewing on the dried bean pods and chasing the other dogs. It is good entertainment watching them stumble and tumble over each other as their legs get stronger allowing them to run. Jumping up the cement steps, only to fall back down again, but up they get and try again. They want to follow as we head to the dining area to have my meal, but they stop short as if there is an invisible barrier drawn in the sand, a line they instinctively feel they should not cross. I keep hoping if they make it to the kitchen area, they will decide to stay there for awhile. No such luck…….so far.

What happens when you have soft fur and short legs, walking through sticky grass…..

And of course we must introduce our newest family member – Scooby.

I would say he has Jack Russell in him, but who knows what else. He’s very pretty

I know – we didn’t really need another dog, at least I don’t, but Scooby is meant to be Javier’s dog and he is making every effort to ensure he stays close to him. When Javier goes to work, Scooby also goes, and this I believe will go a long way to ensuring loyalty. For this I am grateful. When they get home and Scooby is free to go, he bolts over to where we are to play with Scott. They have become best buddies (BFF’s) similar in age and spirit. Scooby can hardly contain himself when he sees any one of us and races at breakneck speed to join us. Scott and he have a great romp and then he goes back home. This I like, a dog that doesn’t stay (kinda like grandchildren) – you love ‘em and they go home.

Scooby has no fear….
