Meeting the Owl November 8, 1993

Today when we were coming home from town we once again saw the owl on the fence post at the old farm across the road from our long, winding driveway. Back home while I was making supper I got the sudden urge to go and see if I could get close to it. I just felt a connection to this bird that visits me in my dreams and in real life. I talked to Patrick about what I felt and he encouraged me to go. He would finish supper and send the boys to get me when supper was ready.

So I walked down our long winding driveway to the road and the old abandoned farmhouse. The owl was still there, now on a post closer to the farmhouse itself and just in front of the old barn. Must be good hunting grounds!

Actually I think I would have missed it because of how well it was camouflaged against the tall grasses and the grey barn wood behind. I was looking for it where it had been, scanning the field and the trees thinking he had moved on and that perhaps I had missed the opportunity. Just then as I started to turn back I saw him lift a wing, showing me his location. I was thrilled!

As I walked closer he seemed nervous, hopping from one post to the other. I moved slowly until I felt I was close enough not to spook him and slowly sat on the ground. The temperature was dropping as the sun was going down and the ground was cold with approaching winter, but I didn’t seem to mind, amazed he did not fly away. In fact he flew towards me once I was settled and landed on a post about ten feet from where I was sitting.

We just gazed at each other. I felt as if he could see right through me with those deep round eyes. There was such an amazing feeling that he knew me, everything about me. It is difficult to explain, but I was grateful for the experience. He would jump down from his post as if he was catching a mouse, perhaps missing it and then flap back up onto the post.

I’m not sure how long I was there but it was getting dark and I could hear the boys as they came along the driveway to get me for supper. The owl, also hearing their approach flew away when they reached the road at the entrance of our drive, landing on a telephone pole a ways away. I got up and went to meet the boys and we all headed back to the house and a warm supper. I was looking back as I walked, saying thank you for the experience. Truly wonderful!

Not the Great Grey of my experiences and dreams, but I love owls. I drew this one because of meetings had while living in Maple Creek. More than once while driving home from work in the wee hours of the morning, the barn owl flew directly across my windshield. I was amazed at the skill needed to accomplish this without losing his/her life. Always, I consider these experiences to be spirit messages, delivered in many forms, often at very critical junctures.
