Yesterday we traveled to a very special place to explore the home of the South American condor. It was a wonderful experience even though the condors did not appear for us this day, but still it is a place where ancient magic can be felt.
We arrived at the end of the road, continuing our journey on foot, another few miles on a rough dirt road. We were told this was the road the Incans used to travel to Quito before the Spanish arrived. It would have been at least a two day journey by donkey, or on foot. But this was the way merchants of old travelled these vast distances.
The cobblestone road we initially drove up had been built about eighty years ago, nothing more than a rough dirt track before then. We wondered about the condition of the road when the rainy season hit, if the continuous rains would wash away the roads and make them impassable. However, our guide said the mountains absorb the rain quickly so it does not rush down the surface of the mountain fast and hard, but very slowly as the earth and foliage draw it in. Pretty amazing really, considering the incredibly steep slopes and deeply carved valleys.
The cinder cone lake where we parked to continue on our journey is the top of an ancient volcano. We admired the surroundings as our guide played his flute, hoping to call in the Condors but they did not arrive, so we went ahead and walked the dirt road hoping to see them higher up.
We each took the walk at different paces, sometimes joining together, sharing our impressions about this amazing place. Walking on my own, deep in thought, I had the sudden urge to check out the view. When we started the walk we were standing on the shore of the lake. By the time I reached this particular spot I was looking down on the lake three hundred meters below, and at my feet to my great surprise I saw a large paw print. When the others caught up I showed it to them and we all agreed it most likely belonged to puma which are known to roam the area. I couldn’t believe my luck, especially since I came within inches of stepping on it.
As we continued on it occurred to our guide that perhaps the reason we were not seeing condors was caused by recent road repair activity, smoothing out the ruts, etc. The noise would have bothered them and most likely they had retreated deeper into their territory. Unfortunate for us, but hopefully one day we will be able to make a return visit.
We left the dirt road and ventured up the side of a steep hill with a flat area on top where we could sit and make an offering to the spirits of the mountain. Given the amazing history of this area it was truly wonderful experience. I won’t explain it all because this was a sacred experience, and things so personal should not be openly shared.
After our ceremony we began our long journey back. We were so satisfied inside, filled with peace and joy for the connection made with the earth, spirits and sky. The setting sun outlined the darkening mountain; crisp deep blue sky with incredibly bright stars taking their rightful place. Venus and Mars twinkled above while the backlit mountain resembled a perfect human face looking to the stars, as were we. It was only 6:00 pm, but we were shrouded in darkness as we arrived back at the lakeshore and our vehicle.
Our guide explained that often when visiting sacred places such as this, those who walked the path will have spirit dreams, so it is good to offer a prayer of thanks to the spirits of the mountain. I was excited at the prospect of having such a dream, an experience I have not had in many months.
And that night…
In the first dream I was with a woman who had just lost her husband. At first I didn’t realize how overwhelmed with grief she was; picking up her sadness, but not her immense grief. I’m not sure why, but I imagine it was because she was someone I do not know. I was at this “wake”, not really understanding why.
As I took a breath and turned to face her squarely I began to feel intense sadness. Suddenly I reached over and touched her left cheek. She looked up at me and our eyes made the connection despite our not knowing each other. Inside my head I heard myself say, “For tonight you will not grieve, you will sleep in peace to begin again tomorrow.” That was all I could remember as I awoke.
After several hours I again fell asleep. I had been disappointed to lay awake for so many hours, especially after visiting the home of the condors, thinking I had maybe not been sincere enough in my prayers. But letting go of that disappointment I realized perhaps I just did not fully understand the significance of the first dream. I did finally fall back to sleep and into a beautiful new dream I hope I can accurately describe.
I was here at the Kichwa Sisari Center where I like to sit on the balcony and just be in the space. I was watching the sky and enjoying the vista, when I saw a very large bird circling closer and closer. I ran to let the others know I saw a condor, that it was coming here.
At first I thought it was a bald eagle, but it was much too large. Downstairs there were some children playing in a circle close to a big rock. It looked for a moment like they were playing with the four new puppies, but as I got closer I saw it was the head of the condor coming up from the ground, and then pulling itself free from the circle of hands to fly free.
Because its head was all white, I was confused at first because it seemed as if a bald eagle not a condor was emerging from the circle. Truthfully, as it flew in front of me I would have described it as a combination of the two birds – the head of the bald eagle and the body of the condor.
It flew past me, turning it’s body to give me the full affect of it’s size and grandeur. It was so close and it’s size a bit overwhelming as I reached out to almost touch it. This great bird’s presence seemed a very special and significant gift with which to be blessed.

I had a realization this morning which has also given a meaning to this dream. The other day at the teaching while conducting a Pacha Manka (earth pot) ceremony, the shaman told the people attending there would come a day when the condor would fly with the eagle. The eagle represents the mind and the condor the heart. To me this explained why in my dream the bird had the head of an eagle and the body of the condor. The message which I felt came from the spirits now seeping into my thoughts was that my body is the condor, my head the eagle.
I was born in South America to a man famous for his big heart. My mother was born in the United States it’s symbol the eagle (head). They came from two different worlds – those worlds set against each other due to political reasons. Because of the circumstances at the time, my presence would have been a complication so I was taken to North America once my memories were safely locked away in that special room in my mind, never to come out, but nothing lasts forever.
Now I am back here in the land of my father, the land of the Condor (heart) and I feel the message was meant to show me the condor and the eagle are united again, I am home once more. It is time to share my story.
