Yesterday while looking for the song Cruel, Crazy, Beautiful Word by Johnny Clegg, I instead came across articles telling of his death. – it was a shock. I have included the article above written by The Guardian, which talks of his extraordinary career, his life in Africa and the gift he was. There are not many willing to face such retribution, a direct slap in the face for the government who imprisoned, tortured, and killed those who dared to oppose the law forbidding Whites to mix with Blacks. I see him as being very courageous refusing to bow down to the idea this simple right to freedom could be taken away. The cruel behaviour against those who fought against the governments wishes, was absolute and could only inspire fear, anger and hatred. Yes a cruel, and crazy world, yet so beautiful, something his lyrics referred to often.
Once again this program did not save my writing when I hit the save button and watched it say “Saved”. So I am struggling to remember what I said, out of respect for this man who was so much for so many.
No matter the color of your skin, your religion, your country of origin, your right to live a full and beautiful life should be the same. I believe this is what Johnny Clegg and the different bands he played with represented. His determination to fight for his right to perform with those he chose, an inspiration for us all. It is not the color of your skin which decides the kind of person you are, but still racial discrimination is apparent in our world, the loss of lives continuing to haunt us daily no matter where we live. I love the idea of who Johnny Clegg was – his courage and strength of character shown in his actions as he travelled with his message, voiced through his music.
When watching the videos yesterday for the first time, I enjoyed seeing the incredible energy, and love he demonstrated for the music, the people and the land he called home, Africa. He will be missed by many, as he gave much to a world determined to hate. Through his dedication, we saw the contrasts of a troubled land, showing us the beauty of that land and the many who live there, as well as those who created the web of greed and dishonesty, intent on controlling it. For those who choose to walk the path of higher meaning, their strength is undeniable, their smiles beautiful, their willingness to let go of the hate and anger remarkable.
As he joins those that have gone before him, may he Rest In Peace knowing he lived his life with great honour while sharing his wisdom, love and talent. Perhaps he will sing to us still from the stars above, Africa.
